Handspun in India and hand dyed in Vermont, frabjous fibers' newest peace silk yarns bring together the ancient Indian art of handspun silk and the modern aesthetic of contemporary american fiber arts. The commendable fair trade and ethical attributes of Peace Silk can now be worn well in vibrant, hand dyed color!
This soft, handcrafted yarn is spun out of Ahimsa silk or “peace silk” from the eri silkworm, a type originally favored by Buddhist monks who did not approve of killing the silk larvae before harvesting the raw silk. When the moth leaves the cocoon naturally, it cuts a small hole in the silk which shortens the fibers; in traditional production, they are gassed in their cocoons so they do not harm the silk when they emerge. To produce Ahimsa silk the cocoons are harvested after the moths emerge; these shorter fibers have a shine similar to reeled silk, but a somewhat nubby texture.
Our Peace Silk is handspun in India, 2-ply, and slightly "thick and thin".
